Tackle

There are two tackle stores in Campbell River.    Our preferred store is Tyee Marine where they have an amazing stock of tackle which should cover everything you may need and a whole lot more! They also have an extensive website where you can purchase or order items prior to your trip. The store
can either hold them ready for your arrival, or, ship them to you in the UK.   Between us we should be able to answer any queries which you may have.   The staff at Tyee Marine are really helpful and will also answer email enquiries promptly.

There is another store in Campbell River which is called River Sportsman. This store is near where we stay which is convenient for those last minute items before setting off for a day's fishing.

Equipment

Rods: a) Fly: if you are fishing for mainly Pink or Coho Salmon then a single handed rod of 9 to 10’6”, rated #8 to 10 will be adequate. A fighting butt is important to reduce the strain on your wrists.

If you are coming to catch King Salmon then you should also bring a double handed salmon fly rod rated #10 to 12. Anything from 14 ft to 16 ft works well. Even on some of the smaller rivers you have to use them, not for casting but to try and control the fish. If you use a single handed rod on these big fish then the fish will be totally exhausted by the time you land it. Use a double handed rod and the extra power enables you to get the fish in sooner and they recover quicker and swim off strongly.

b) Spinning or bait fishing can be successful with 9’– 11’ rods and appropriate reels and lines, especially when fishing off the seashore.

Reels: We recommend Large arbor reels with good drag systems. These salmon can strip off 100 yards of line and backing and the large arbor reels make it easier to recover the line.

Lines: The most successful lines have a very fast sinking tip with a short leader of around 3ft. Make sure the backing (and the joining knot) is stronger than the fly line. Lines can easily be lost.

Flies: To comply with regulations, single barbless hooks, or hooks with flattened barbs must be used. The most successful patterns are weighted Muddlers tied on a size 8 or 10 longshank hook. Flies are available from us or the local tackle stores.   For a sample of the best fly patterns click here.

Waders: Lightweight chest by preference, thigh waders or boots for the Quinsum.

Tom Davis, of Tomahawk Rods builds single handed 9ft, 4 piece rods, rated #8/9 designed specially for fishing in British Columbia.   They are British built to order using top quality British Blanks. Cost is approximately £185 +P&P. upwards, depending on specification. He can also build double handed salmon fly rods to order. Enquiries should be made through +44 (0)1835 850 788 or by email to imcldavis@aol.com

Recommendations

Insurance. Make sure you take out your own comprehensive insurance. We are not a travel company and accept no liability for any problems arising. The airline may be able to provide this at competitive rates at the time of booking so please let us know.

Safety. We have mentioned that you are responsible for your own safety throughout the trip. Make sure you take all necessary precautions, for example lifevests/buoyancy aids and wading sticks when wading.

Clothing. September can have varying temperatures, so take gear for hot summer weather and cool autumn.

Meals. Food is relatively cheap, so for $15 to $20 you can eat plenty in a restaurant, join us for a barbecue, or cook your own in the Motel.

Mosquitoes. Never had a problem, so far, although it is probably wise to take some insect repellant, just in case.
